The time stands still in 'Olympos. Hardly another place in Greece has saved so much living traditions like this northern village, founded in the 8th century as a place of refuge from pirates. It cannot be observed from the seaside and for this reason offered optimal shelter, the more so as it's old houses have only very small windows at their sea sides. As a result to local seclusion the inhabitants stayed among theirselves. Mostly untouched by political changes they kept a lot of traditions, social rules and some linguistic characteristics until today. The village dialect, which is spoken nowhere else on the island, contains thousands of "Dorisms", which refer to the language of the ancient Dorien cities Wurgúnda and Trístomo. The terms of modern civilisation are coming slowly, like electricity which has been finally introduced in 1980. There are old windmills, narrow alleys and the traditional costumes of the 'Olympian women, who bake their breads in stony ovens like some hundred years ago. All those elements form an impressing atmosphere of quietness and relaxation, only interrupted each noon by the arriving tourist busses. Handmade leather boots are a local speciality as well. Made-to-measure their production takes some time, but they will be sent to your home address if you accept advance payment. For more detailed information in English
